     Bill Aarnio, Chairman

I would like to thank everyone who participated in the annual WRFPD Memorial Weekend Fund-raiser. A big hooray for Donna Maxwell and her super committee Cathie Condit, Vicki Woodward and Jan Vinsonhaler for their great job of organizing the breakfast and bake food sale. You ladies did a magnificent job. Thanks to Jim and Darla Mormance for contacting the Boring area nurseries for plant donations and to Karl Rebstock for hauling them to Wamic. Thanks to Dave Deurwaarder who sat at the table in the entry way selling raffle tickets. Thanks to everyone who baked and donated all of the wonderful goodies and finally, thanks to everyone who supported WRFPD by coming in for breakfast, bake goods and plants. While the Memorial Weekend Fund-raiser is still the single largest revenue producer for the Wamic Fire Department, revenue raised continues to steadily decline primarily due to the number of Boring area nurseries gradually going out of business and the competition from the ever increasing number of area activities. We had fabulous plants this year, but the number of plants is the fewest I can remember since moving here in 2005. As a comparison in 2011 we raised over $15,000 compared to this year when we cleared about $10,500.

Family Fun Day is upon us. This year’s gathering will be on Saturday July 2nd from 11:00 A.M. until 3:00 P.M. Among the activities planned are several air structures, a larger climbing wall, a straw hunt for prizes for the little kids and some cash for the older ones, and the fish pond will return weather permitting. Free hot dogs and hamburgers with all the fixings, snow cones and drinks will be provided. As always we will be holding a general raffle with prize in the $15-20 range, bicycles for the under 18 group as well as a number of larger prizes to be raffled individually. Please remember, you must be present to win raffle prizes. Set up for FFD will be on Friday afternoon, July 1st and early on Saturday morning July 2nd with clean-up on Saturday afternoon after the event ends. Anyone wishing to help need only show up. We hope you and your family will join us for all of the fun.

By now we all know summer has arrived. Some burn restrictions are already in place. Burn barrels are still allowed as are campfires, but all other burning is prohibited. With the weather appearing to be warming quickly, I expect a full burn ban to be in place within the next week or two. Many individuals do not realize that a full burn ban also includes any BBQs--including Traeger style smokers--that produce any ash or coals. Stoves, BBQs and campfires fueled by propane are permitted. Information on the current burn restrictions can be found online at wamicfd.com or by calling 541-544-2338 and listening to the recorded message.

Of course, as summer arrives, not only do burn bans take place, but the number of visitors in our area goes up dramatically. With an increase of area visitors, comes an increase in the number of both medical and fire emergencies. As always WRFPD is always in need of additional volunteers. The training is not easy, the pay is nonexistent, but the satisfaction of saving someone’s life or home cannot be described.

Finally, I remind you that the WRFPD Board holds its monthly meeting on the third Saturday of the month at the Fire Station. Meetings are always open to the public and your input is welcomed.

For those of you who wish to stay active, the Wamic School Gym is open for business. If you haven’t stopped by to check it out I think you will be surprised by the amount and quality of the equipment. For only $10 per month, membership gives you chance to exercise and socialize at the same time. Additional information is available by sending an email to wamicgym@gmail.com.

If you have questions or concerns about the District, check out our website-- wamicfd.com -- the answer might be there, or send us an email, or join us at our monthly meeting at 10:00 AM on the 3rd Saturday of each month. The monthly meeting is held in the meeting room at the main firehall near the Pine Hollow Reservoir south boat ramp.

John Goleman, Director

I have either lived or vacationed in the Wamic area since the early 60s and have been a full time resident since 2007. I am a volunteer firefighter and I also volunteer as an EMT. I love the area and do not plan on going anywhere else.

Cathy Condit, Director

Board member since 2015.

Neil Senger, Vice Chairman

I am very interested in sharing my career experience as both a volunteer and a professional firefighter with the Wamic Rural Fire Protection District. I started working as a volunteer rural fire fighter 34 years ago in Sandy, OR, progressing through thousands of hours of training, positions of responsibility, and assignments to Battalion Chief of Operations at Hoodland Fire Dept. Moving to the Smock Prairie area 6 years ago, I want to help our local fire department and emergency response capabilities grow with our community needs.

Ray Johnson, Director

Board member since 2015.
